Castella(カステラ) is a Japanese sponge cake made of sugar, flour, eggs, and starch syrup.
This cake was brought to Japan by Portuguese merchants in the 16th century.
The name is derived from Portuguese “Pão de Castela”, meaning “bread from Castile”.
